Tween Boy Room Re-Do with Glidden

Choosing a paint color is my least favorite DIY job. I LOVE repainting a space and watching it transform, but the process to choosing that perfect color is not fun. I am picky about colors and undertones, the way they change throughout the day and play off the furnishings. For example this is my son’s room now with a (what I thought was neutral) gray that turned out to look pretty much blue. I don’t mind blue, but I didn’t really want that blue and looking through all the color choices at once was a bit overwhelming.

When we moved in, we kind of just threw all his stuff in his room and it’s been that way ever since. I told him that his room would be the first one I “worked” on when we had time.

When Glidden paint asked us to try out their color choosing tools, we jumped on board! We chose My Image Inspiration, which uses images you choose to present you with a simplified Glidden paint color palette. We loved this idea because my 10-year-old could choose his inspiration images to completely customize his room.

For a peek at how it works, here’s the first image we uploaded

and here’s a screenshot of the My Image Inspiration page after I uploaded the photo

I love that it chooses and suggests colors that will actually look good on a wall in your room and not just a random color from the photo. You can choose to email or print yourself a shopping list based on the simplified color palette you chose.

Here are some images he picked out for inspiration in addition to the one above:

and this image from The Inspired Room that we saw on Glidden Paint’s Color Inspiration Pin Board.

and this image found on the Colortopia blog:

Right now we are leaning towards using Onyx Black with Smoky Charcoal.

We’ve loved browsing the color palettes and choosing some of our own inspiration, and can’t wait to make a final decision! Before we do though, we’d love some feedback from you – which photo do you think we should go with for this tween boy room re-do?

  1. when we moved in our new house almost four years ago, my hubby found a window in the attic — it's old and scratched and turquoise. It's been the inspiration on my mantle for a while now (since before turquoise and old windows became popular)

  2. I used a lot of Pinterest links when I redid my daugter's room from a nursery to a toddler room w/ a big girl bed. It was fun bring in some pinks and girly elements.

  3. I recently transformed our guest room/office into a nursery for my daughter.

  4. We overhauled our guest room. The previous owner had painted pink and green stripes of varying widths on one wall for her daughter. It's a guest room so it was a bit too girly. We went with simple off white and let the decorations add color. On Thur, we're going to paint our son's room to make it more his than it is now. It's all off-white with some damage done from removing cable wraps from the walls. We're painting the top 2/3 to a bright, just off-white and bright red below.

  5. Our last painting project was our toddler's room. I found an adorable crib bedding set and curtains and a diaper stacker that I loved inpurple and painted her room to match. Then I was inspired and the rest bloomed from there. It was so much fun!

  6. I love the beach scene. It's calming (which is always good for a tween) and it's something he could continue to grow with.
My son is only 4, but has so many ideas already about what he loves and wants to be surrounded with. We let him make choices when we can. He loves bright colors. I love taking him into the stores or on the websites and seeing what he will pick for himself. It's amazing how much more in tune he is with his own room/space than we are. <3 this post.

  7. I get very anxious choosing wall color. My hubby, fortunately for me, is really quite good at it!! I think the My Image Inspiration would be a wonderful tool for me to use!!

  8. Our last home decor project was my son's nursery. We went with a light gray for the walls, with the focus wall being white and gray stripes. Doing this took what could have been a boring color and completely transformed the room. Then we just added pops of color with the rug, lamp shade, bedding, etc. Now the room is quite versatile and we are not tied to a single color!

  9. I love Pinterest as well for inspiration. Trying to get rid of my 1970's bi-fold closet doors. Found lots of cool ideas. Want to spend the summer redoing my bedroom and then my youngest son's room

I redid a bathroom in browns and white…very New England-y! I love the look…it has inspired me to do more. But, what to do???

  11. I love painting rooms. We really don't have any room that we haven't painted since moving in except the one bathroom and it's because I haven't found inspiration yet. My current project is my daughter's room (8) which we're taking from a pink & purple woodland fairy room to a beach/surf inspired room. We are having trouble picking the wall color so I love that you posted about this today. I will use their tool and put some of our photos in to see what they come up with for us.

P.S. I love the first photo with the Route 66 sign as the inspiration colors. But what does he want? It's his room.

  12. Our last painting project was our kitchen and dining room, and we picked the color based on some WPA-style national park posters we wanted to hang in the dining room.

  13. My current redecorating project was inspired by clostrophobia. We decorated our kids' bedroom for 1 boy, it now houses 2 boys and we are getting ready to add a third child in a few months. With a bunk bed and a crib (never mind all their stuff) that (very small) room is getting crowded! We are still in planning phases, trying to figure out how to make it feel bigger, paint color being a big part of that.

My last inspiration came from a comforter set that I purchased for our bedroom. it had brown and tans in it and we painted the bedroom a light beige color.

  15. We painted a chocolate accent wall that was inspired by a home design magazine.

  16. Our last home décor project was inspired by a message board I read in which people recommended paint colors that would go with our kitchen cabinets.

  17. I get inspired by talking with friends who are moving — they always have great, fresh ideas for paint and decor!

  18. The sense of peace, inspired my latest home decor project. The paint in the bathroom was too loud, it needed toning down.

  19. I'm always inspired by the colors in nature – sand, sun, sky, clouds.

  20. I painted my dining room after I saw a room at my friend's house!

  21. my last home decor project was inspired by a laundry-room makeover I tore out of a magazine.

  22. I found a blue and gray patterned chair that I loved, and I redecorated our entire living room around that one chair. Painted the walls a dark blue, new couch, curtains, pillows, bookshelf, lamps. Now its my favorite room!
