I love science (I don’t think that’s a secret)! This fun activity looks at the reaction between UV light and phosphors.

All you need is a UV blacklight we just used a 9LED version (the small ones), vaseline and gloves (optional). You can also gather other items to test like tonic water or the insert of a highlighter soaked in water.

Spread vaseline all over your gloved hand (this makes cleanup A LOT easier).

Then, go into a dark space and see what your hand looks like under the blacklight!

See what other items react. Tonic water has quinine a chemical which contains phosphors like the vaseline.

  1. This is so cool. I want a whole party of black lights and tonic water out by the pool filled with glow in the dark beach balls and everyone has to do this experiment to get a ticket to the dance floor. Ha : )
