10 Reasons NOT to Take your Tween or Teen to Disneyland This Fall

I was in Anaheim, CA a couple of weeks ago for the D23 Expo with my tween (12 year old) son. I thought it would be fun to go to Disneyland for the day just the two of us. Boy was I wrong.

10 Reasons NOT to take your Tween or Teen to Disneyland, especially by yourselves:

1. Laughing. Who wants to be caught laughing and having a great time with their tween. I mean, what if someone I know saw me?! Definitely don’t go on Maters Junkyard Jamboree in Cars Land if you don’t want to be caught laughing.

I mean, rushing for fast passes or waiting for Radiator Springs Racers (which I’m sorry is totally worth any amount of wait) is the best ever.

3. Trying new things. I don’t know about you, but I never want to try new things. Like the watermelon lemonade at the Mad T Party. I never would have tried that if we hadn’t been wandering around together just taking in the sights of Hollywood Land in California Adventure, now I want it all the time.

4. You definitely don’t want to check out Halloweentime or Mickey’s Halloween Party especially now that tickets are available especially if you don’t want to see your tweens dressed up and having fun like they used to on Halloween. I mean, all those cute costumes, candy, treats and special events? No fun for tweens especially mine from last year.

5. If you don’t like improvements or magic you definitely don’t want to check out what’s new at Disneyland. That Hatbox Ghost especially, your tweens will just want to ride the Haunted Mansion all over again!

6. You definitely don’t want to spend all that extra talking time with your tween over dinner. Especially if you’re gluten free, all those options and the easy new allergy menus? You’ll just end up way too full and then crave the food for weeks, especially if you get the gluten free flatbread at Storytellers Cafe.

7. You’ll definitely NOT want to go and take a picture with a Mickey Ice Cream bar. It will just make everyone at home jealous. Even if you are just visiting Downtown Disney and can get a bar in the gift shop at the Disneyland Hotel.

8. You shouldn’t take your tween or teen to Disneyland because they’ll just want to stay out late and then you’ll have to see the castle at night all lit up and fancy for the 60th Anniversary Diamond Celebration. It will just make you want to do the same to your house.

9. If you take your tween or teen to Disneyland you’ll HAVE to stop at all the new photo spots for pictures. It’s some sort of rule. Then you’ll just end up with too many photos to frame.

10. You should definitely not take your tween or teen to Disneyland because you’ll have an amazing time just being together and when it’s finally time to leave you really won’t want to.

10 reasons you should definitely NOT take your tween or teen to Disneyland this year (a sarcastic post from allfortheboys.com)I don’t think I need a disclaimer, but yes I’m being completely sarcastic. Being at Disneyland with just my 12 year old was seriously so much fun and relaxed. We can’t WAIT to go back – especially for all the new Star Wars fun!

  1. Your reverse psychology won’t not work on me, Lady!
This is such a great post! Thanks for the laughs and the lead on the gf flatbread!

  2. Allison, We took our Disney World obsessed family to Disneyland for the first time last spring for a belated Spring Break. My kids are 17, 15 and 13. They HAD the best time visiting this park(s). We have 100s of photos in a shared photo album of Selfies taken with every character they could find. And the characters LOVED it. At a character breakfast, we were in the earliest seating (with the dining hall not being busy yet) and as soon as my teens started to take selfies with one character, every character ran over to be a part of one giant selfie photo. They took selfies with Mater, with Lightening McQueen, with random characters as they walked to their designated spot. It became a new game, to find every character they could.
    🙂
Definitely not a fun thing for Teenagers at Disneyland.

    • Oh that doesn’t sound like any fun AT ALL! I bet you could make a whole album of character selfies with your teens and who wants to see that?! 😉

  3. I loved this. My son (age 15) and I went this past summer for the 60th. Just about everything you said is what we experienced. I think as they get older they need days/trips like this. Thank you so much for this. It definately put a smile on my face.

    • Aww I seriously love hearing that. Thank YOU for making me smile! I completely agree, I am going to soak up any quality time I can get with them during their teenage years because I know it will happen less and less often.

  4. We just got back from Disneyland Half Marathon weekend. I always run the 10k. We have been taking our 3 boys at least 3x a year sice they were born. I hate to be negative but this was the worst trip ever with them. I miss my babies. They were so much easier back then. We’d wander around the park. They’d get hungry I’d sit down and discreetly nurse them anywhere and everywhere. Ride choices were easier, even the lines were mire manageable since they were easier to carry. I’m not sure I can take them again until they’re older. I’m so bummed. My husband and I are huge Disneyland fans. We love going. He proposed to me on Castaway Cay when I worked for Disney Cruise Line. Maybe when they’re tweens we can have a good time again. Reading this gives me some hope!

    • How old are they? I’ll admit some of those middle ages (especially with siblings) can be tough! I am loving the ages that they’re at now, and taking one at a time is even better 😉 Glad I could give you some hope lol! Good luck!

      • They’re 5, 4 and just turned 2 years old. This trip was just difficult. It’s funny how you don’t realize how easy babies are until you have a second (or third) or they’re older. Were going back for Avengers Half Marathon weekend and my mom / nanny is coming along. I’m so grateful she’s a hotel person and has no problem taking the kids back.
