We did a whole Roadtrip Roundup series last year around this time so definitely check it out if you’re in need of some inspiration. We are heading to the Sandwich Islands soon (yeah I know I’m excited) and I’ve been preparing 6 hour airplane flight bags for the boys. They have always been excellent travelers but maybe it’s partly because we always travel prepared? I personally don’t like being bored when travelling I can’t imagine it being easier as 7 and 9 year old boys.

I thought I’d share some things I’ve been collecting for the boys’ bags as well as things they’ve picked out. At their ages it’s mostly books with a few fun things thrown in.

They are both getting a small plastic box with a LEGO base plate – to help hold pieces down – and a small LEGO set (they know losing a piece or two is a possibility).

The LEGO Captain Americas Avenging Cycle 6865

and the LEGO Star Wars The Battle of Naboo 7929 were both requested recently

The Ultimate Sticker Collection: LEGO Star Wars: Minifigures

and DUDE Diary #2 were some of the activity book requests

I got them Travel Tangoes – Animals. My brother and I liked playing with the original when we were about their age so I thought they might like it too!

They’ll also each get a “professional” Sketchpad and colored pencils/crayons.

Something new for this vacation is journals! They’ll each get a journal, small travel scissors, tape, and a glue stick so they can record their vacation in their own words and save bits and pieces that are important to them on their trip. They are both super excited about it.

They’ve been eyeing these Moleskine Lego Black Brick Ruled

They have fun messing around with silly Teeth

or Mustaches

We’ll also have some electronic devices (ipods, Nintendo 3DS, laptop) but those only go so far! Here are some of the books that they wanted to add to their bags:

I think I may still get some Wikki Stix

I’m sure we’ll get a couple new movies on the ipods, and maybe download a few new game apps before we leave. Has anyone else seen any great new books or activities lately that would work great for travel?

  1. Oh, I love the 39 Clues series! My son is still too little, but I have been listening to the audiobooks, downloaded to my iPad. What a cool adventure!

  2. My kids love those little flip-top activity books you can get at dollar stores for travelling. They're full of word searches, mazes, games, etc. That and a pencil or two and they're good for an hour or more. Then it's on to the next thing! My son is really into music so his iPod keeps him happy for hours.

  3. Hey There! You've got some great ideas here. Things I wouldn't have thought of! We do a lot of road trips in the summer. I have an overabundance of those wikki stix. Never thought about taking them along for car rides! Those magnetic travel tangoes would be a big hit too. Thanks for the ideas!

  4. We are frequent road trippers and I have found that surprises are the key for my bunch. Even my 13 yr old! I have my surprise bag up front with me and every few hours or so I give them one of their surprises.
Packing for a road trip, rather than a plane trip is a bit easier though. They loved the lanterns I bought for this year's 2 day trip to Colorado and used them after we were there. Webkinz were a surprise for the 5 yr old along with Legos too. Coloring books and brand spankin' new colors for my 10 yr old who doesnt' really color anymore but loves it on a road trip. My 13 yr old got a new book and a Rolling Stone mag. Even the $1 spot at Target was a successful place to find a few goodies.
I loved your idea about the vacation journal!

  5. Maybe not the best for the actual car ride, but for summer. My boys are DYING to play with the StarWars paper airplane book that we got as a birthday gift for a friend.

  6. My five year old (and I) have really been enjoying TriOminos, if you can find them. Like dominos, but with three sides. Great for math skills, fun to play and portable. Wikistix always come with us! I also always bring an empty sippy cup/travel cup-type of cup when we travel- prevents spills on the seat. Have a great trip!

  7. My boys love playing those travel games – connect 4, blokus – and don't forget snacks – those are always fun – our last trip each child got a pack of Angry Bird gummies – they were thrilled.
