A New “Fall” Tradition

As some of you might know we live in the desert so while the weather man says it’s “Fall” we don’t see a big change in weather quite yet. It still is in the 100’s (F) here and swimming is still on our list of activities. However I thought this seemed like a good year to start a new family Fall tradition of apple picking. About an hour north of us we can drive to a little ranch and pick our own apples and a few pears.

The crop was pretty low this year and they weren’t even charging people when we got up there because of it. We weren’t going to let that stop us though! We found some good ones still hidden in the leaves. The boys’ favorite part was the animals I think. Both warm and cold blooded animals. I swear my boys could find the tiniest most camouflage bugs anywhere!

(a treat for the road)

For those in the Phoenix area we went to Date Creek Ranch just north of Wickenburg. Unfortunately they only had one apple picking weekend and are now sold out (we only heard about it the morning of) but definitely keep an eye on it for next year.

We’ll go to a “pumpkin patch” here in a few weeks but that’s about all I have planned. I’d love to add some new ones though. What are your family’s Fall traditions?

  1. We pick the blackberries that grow wild on our property and make jam, harvest apples from our apple trees (although the trees are near the end of their lives and don't produce very good apples anymore) and visit local farms for a hayride and games. We also like to take a weekend when the leaves are turning and go hiking in at Olympic National Park, which is just a few miles away from us.
Washington state is rainy and gray 75% of the year, but early-August – mid-October are beautiful!

  2. Where is this farm that you found?! We live in Surprise and I've never been able to find anywhere to go apple picking unless we drive to the corners of the state. Looks like you guys had a perfect day!

  3. I love these images. There is something kind of magical about orchards and picking your own fruit. Glad you got to have a little taste of fall. Hope the apple butter turned out too!

  4. SO fun!! Thanks for sharing where you went. I'd love to check into it for next year.

I posted about fall this morning too. It's still hot during the day but have you noticed that the mornings and evenings are heavenly? I still have some of my windows open! Love it!

  5. Which pumpkin patch do you go to? We've tried Tolmachoff Farms, but they're usually crazy busy, and last year we went to a place near Prescott. I'm always looking for somewhere new though.

  6. I love apple picking, it's one of the things I miss most about living in a climate that has 4 seasons. But we do the pumpkin this later in october when it's not so hot. Some of our fave Fall traditions are making carmel apples, pumpkin picking and decorating them.

  7. we used to help my grandma with her plum-trees. eat them fresh or made a pie. here in switzerland we've got a lot of apple-tree's, but not that many are for self picking. we love to getting walnut's from a tree by the playground. make a marblegame with a hollow tree or split them up and make mini-boats floating in a bowl.
