Getting Started with Invisalign®

Disclosure: Parker is receiving complimentary treatment but, as usual, opinions here and expressed in the comments are 100% our own.

Not only is he starting high school this year, Parker started on his Invisalign® treatment! We have been considering Invisalign since we first knew that he’d need treatment and finally scheduled our appointment with Dr. Feldman at Feldman Orthodontics find a doctor in your area here. They answered all our questions and he was starting his treatment so quickly!Getting started with Invisalign with a teen

Instead of spitting out a ton of information in one giant post I thought we’d share our journey along the way this year. Since we didn’t know anyone around us directly to get treatment, you might not either, so we’ll be your friend who gets treatment first 😉

First of all the cost of Invisalign treatment is often comparable in price to braces, so definitely look into it if that’s one thing that was concerning you. Many dental insurance plans are covering treatment like they would braces so don’t forget to check yours as well!

We couldn’t believe how easy our appointment was with Dr. Feldman. At the end they were able to order his aligners and we had them faster than I thought we would. Invisalign has a whole section for teens on their site so we didn’t have too many questions up front. It has lots of great info if you want to check it out here.

Here’s Parker’s “before” shot without his Invisalign aligner in (first) and with his Invisalign aligner in (second). Same spot/lighting so you can see exactly what it looks like when he has it in. If you see any photos on social media with him in it he likely has it on in them too!

We received 10 of his aligners that he switches out once a week. Invisalign treatment can actually now be up to 50% faster with weekly aligner changes! He also got a protective case for his current set and one to hold on to his last set just in case.

He keeps them in unless he’s eating (or drinking something other than water) and he has been SUPER responsible with them so far. He does a great job wearing them when he’s supposed to and switching them out each week. It’s already become such a habit for him that it’s just part of his normal day and eating routine now.

The best part about food with Invisalign is there are no restrictions! Beef jerky, popcorn, sticky candy etc. aren’t off limits. I don’t have to monitor his food at all which was one of the bigger challenges we had with my youngest and traditional braces (well that and them breaking).

Stay tuned to see how his treatment goes and feel free to ask any questions along the way!

  1. Does Invisalign effect his speech at all? Any lisping or slurring caused by wearing them?

    • It took him about 2 days to slightly adjust his speech to get used to talking with them in. He already has a tongue thrust so this was a concern for him as well. He could “hear” it more those first couple of days and learned to adjust and now you really can’t even tell he has it in when he talks. So for him, no not at all!
