We shared an awesome option for learning to play the guitar online early last month. Fender Play is a guided online learning program that teaches new guitar players (in our house that’s my 14 year old, Parker) to get playing in minutes (seriously).  With hundreds of instructional videos (more being added all the time) and hands-on exercises, Fender Play teaches new players based on their personal musical preferences.  The curriculum is designed so that after a few short lessons, a player will be able to learn something new, whether it’s a skill, a recognizable riff or a full song and it definitely works for us!

High School started here last month which helped me realize how truly convenient these online lessons are. He can get in a few minutes or hours of practice and lessons in whenever he wants or has time and they are paying off.

We love that you can pick and choose which songs you want to learn from and play. It makes learning to play so much fun for all of us. Parker loves showing off new riffs of songs him and Dad both like (Chance too apparently).

He has hopped from lesson to lesson/song to song which is completely his style. Parker is the type of kid who reads 6 different books at once so not having to “pass” a lesson or song before moving onto the next is a huge bonus for him. He just started learning a Foo Fighters song and wanted to show us what he learned after one lesson. You can listen on our Instagram post here.

After a few months of fairly consistent lessons Parker feels much more confident than he did when he started knowing literally NOTHING about playing guitar. He’s even been recommending Fender Play to his friends at school when they bring up wanting to learn to play! What’s really unique about the program’s video lessons are the split-screen and over-the-shoulder angles that provides a unique and valuable perspective for the new player. Sometimes just a change in view makes all the difference in “getting” something you couldn’t before.

Here’s a video Fender put together talking about Fender Play to explain it a bit more:

Need even more info to convince you (or your kids) to learn to play? Playing an instrument has tons of great benefits like:

  • Enhances the capacity for overall learning, especially in younger players

  • Boosts concentration

  • Enhances emotional intelligence & IQ

And it’s all done by Fender, the iconic guitar brand that touches nearly every musical genre. So try it out, see if you like it and yes, you can cancel any time (I’m not a fan of subscriptions that make it difficult for you to cancel).

The service is only $19.99 a month (but you can try it for a month for free). We’ll be continuing our subscription for sure. I can’t wait to see what else he learns especially because new songs and lessons are being added regularly! Does anyone in your family want to learn to play?
