There is one think I’ve always had trouble modeling for my kids – taking good care of myself. I, like most parents, spend most of my time taking care of my family (and working) and never enough time taking care of myself. One of the things we really wanted to work on this year is taking small steps toward making our neighborhood (and home) a brighter place. I’m not talking about huge total turnarounds from our normal lives, because that’s not always feasible, but little things to make my family and my neighbors smile a little more or feel a little bit better about themselves.

The easiest change for me to make was remembering to do little things to make people smile. I made up these printables to keep in the car or my purse and the boys LOVE leaving them around the neighborhood with little gifts or treats. No one knows who’s doing it but I hope it brings them a smile because it definitely works for us!

Even just a dollar taped to a vending machine. This is my son’s favorite and watching him smile as we hurry away (and see him “secretly” turn to see if he can catch someone seeing it for the first time) always makes my day.

One small change I’ve made to take better care of myself is finding a favorite cup. Having a cup that keeps my water ice cold means that I drink way more water AND keeps me from grabbing plastic water bottles as we head out the door.

I’ve always been bad about taking care of my skin because I hate going in to the big makeup stores but I don’t want to buy products with certain chemicals in them so I end up not getting anything. Neutrogena created a line for people like me that is formulated without harsh chemical sulfates, paragons, petrolatum, dyes or phthalates. I started using a new line, Neutrogena® Naturals, about a month ago and love it.

One of my favorites, the Neutrogena® Naturals Brightening Moisturizer, is a lightweight formula with 94% naturally derived ingredients and provides moisturization while skin-brightening lemon peel, an effective bionutrient, work with your skin to even skin tone in just 4 weeks! I love that it also has 100% naturally derived sunscreens and Broad Spectrum UVA/UVB Protection. I actually keep it in my bag so I have a lightweight sunscreen to apply when we’re out. I can always remember putting it on the boys but haven’t been very good about it myself.

Neutrogena® Naturals has even designed their packaging with the goal of minimizing the impact on the environment by using recyclable, post-consumer materials and renewable resources whenever possible so if you’re working with your family on that you can kill two birds with one stone!

I have to say, most of all I do love the way it makes me feel and makes my skin look.

I’ve also been experimenting with bath bombs lately to relax in the evenings on particularly stressful days. They smell SO good! What are you doing to take care of yourself or brighten your life lately?!
