Paper plate balloon car

This project combines a lot of the supplies from our theme weeks but the body of the car is made from a paper plate so I figured it worked here.

This is a fun project because the kids can really make a lot of changes and it will still work. We used a paper plate, cardboard, scissors, straws, skewers, balloon, tape and a stapler

Make the plate into a triangle shape and secure with staples, tape or glue. This is one of those projects that would hold together best with glue, but can be done with tape (just be ready to fix it if needed)

Tape the straws to the bottom of the plate. You can trim them if they are sticking too far out or leave as is.

Using a small circlular object, trace 4 circles onto cardboard for the wheels.

Cut out the wheels. Tip: it’s easier to cut out small circles if you cut around them in a square from the larger piece first.

Pierce the center of the wheel with the skewer. Don’t make the hole too big becaues you don’t want the wheels to spin on the skewer.

Put the skewer through one of the straws and add the wheel to the other side and trim the skewer

Next, we taped 3 straws together (with tape the entire length of the straws to keep air from escaping). Then taped the balloon opening to the end of the straws so that the balloon can be blown up from the other end. This is a good time for the kids to experiment and see where air is escaping if the balloon isn’t blowing up, and then fixing it with tape.

Insert and tape the straw/balloon to the inside of the car.

Blow up the balloon and release!

The boys didn’t like the bigger end going first so they switched their balloon to the other side.
