One of our very favorite STEM companies Sphero has a new robot in town & they sent us one to check out. I think it might just be our favorite yet! Sphero BOLT is the latest app-enabled robotic ball from Sphero and he comes with an 8×8 LED Matrix that animates and displays real-time data! This little matrix allows you to create and customize some AWESOME games along with learning to code by drawing on your screen, using Scratch™ blocks, or writing JavaScript text programs.
From the moment you set your BOLT in it’s charging base to charge, you can see how he’s different than the other Sphero balls. That matrix just catches your eye! You can quickly pair & start coding with the Sphero Edu app or Sphero Play app.
I love how the app lets you access Sphero programs so that you can edit & play with some really cool pre-built programs right away. This always helps the boys brainstorm ideas for their own. We had to start by checking out the games that use the LED Matrix on BOLT like Tic Tac Toe!
Then we played around with the animations and even music to pair with the animations!
Sphero BOLTs can even communicate with each other with their infrared communication which allows you to use new advanced coding tactics and create interactive games. It’s also equipped with Bluetooth SMART and a waterproof shell so you can take your BOLT almost anywhere. One of my favorite things about these little robotic balls is how easy they are to travel with or take along with you to a friends’ house.
I could go on and on but you just have to check it out for yourself. Here’s a little video introducing BOLT
Sphero consistently creates one of our top recommended gift ideas of the year and this one is no different. I always love how you can create some simple or extensive coding with any of the Sphero balls, but I also love how you can just play with them. Drive them around, change up the lights, and now play some really cool (and even retro) games in new ways.

That looks fun and should be a good gift for the techy persons.
