I feel like the simplest activities are so often overlooked. Don’t count out the easy, simple fun! Magnets and paperclips are all you need to keep a kiddo entertained for a bit.
To compare, if you have different types of paperclips (uncoated, coated, large small) and magnets (small “super” magnets, large play magnets etc) you can set them all out to see how the magnetism changes.
Start by picking up one paperclip with a magnet.
See how long of a chain you can make or how many paper clips you can pick up.
Can you create any structures with them?
This is one of those activities I like to leave out on the table and the boys will pick them up and play with them while talking or when walking by.
*Note: magnets are dangerous when swallowed so please make sure you pick them up and watch younger ones around magnets.

Place the paper clips into a glass of water with the magnets on the table, and you've got a whole new game. You're right – the simplest boredom busters are often overlooked.
