It’s officially summer in this house! What better way to kick off summer than with an ice cream pool party?! One of the memories my husband has from helping his mom at junior high and high school parties was putting together (and thoroughly enjoying) an ice cream trough. An “ice cream trough” is basically long container filled with a giant, delicious Blue Bunny® PB ‘N Cones™ ice cream sundae!
I’ve made one a few times with the boys but I thought I’d surprise them with a full blown party to celebrate summer with a 2 foot ice cream sundae as the centerpiece.
Party Setup
First I set up the party ahead of time by filling some goodie bags with small fun toys that everyone could play with during the party (instead of just taking them home).
Don’t underestimate the classics like water squirters, crazy string, or launching toys for teens. My boys and their friends LOVE anything to run around with or “attack” each other with.
I put the bags together and then filled a bucket of water balloons for each guest as well.
The table had a plastic tablecloth (so that I could just scoop everything up for simple clean up) and an inflatable “salad bar” that’s made to hold ice to keep salad bar items cool. I thought this was the perfect centerpiece for the sundae.
Pool floats were blown up and placed in the pool and water cups filled right before everyone arrived (have to stay hydrated)!
How to Make a 2 Foot Long Ice Cream Sundae
I always let the boys try new ice cream flavors as a fun treat for the end of the school year. This year they were eyeing the Blue Bunny® PB ‘N Cones™ – vanilla flavored ice cream, peanut butter swirls, dipped cone pieces – YUM! We found this one at Walmart along with the classic must-have ice cream sundae toppings Smucker’s Hot Fudge Spoonable Ice Cream Topping and Reddi-Wip® original whipped topping.
When everyone arrived and I was ready to make the sundae, I added ice to the centerpiece so that it was ready for the sundae when I brought it out.
Using a long skinny container (or you can use loaf pans if you don’t have anything else) fill the bottom with brownies and/or cookies.
Then add scoops of Blue Bunny® ice cream all along the top.
I took the sundae out at this point and added the last toppings outside while everyone gathered around.
To make the sundae a little more interactive once it was finished, I placed bowls of additional toppings into the ice so that everyone can add their favorites. My boys loved salty pretzels along with the PB ‘N Cones™!
Eat straight out of the “trough” or scoop out your serving and place in a separate bowl.
SUCH a fun party treat and the perfect kick off to Summer! Have you ever had a 2 foot sundae? Get even more delicious inspiration HERE.
