We love the tradition of an activity based advent calendar. The boys loved our paper bag advent and we did an envelope advent one year. Last year I didn’t think about it in time to make a new one so I wanted to give myself plenty of time this year! This geometric advent calendar can be moved around and played with to display a fun new pattern as many times as you want. The boys have already moved it around 3 or 4 times since I finished it.
You just need 2″x2″ treat boxes (found these ones at Michaels in the wedding favor isle). You can get them in 100 count on Amazon and share with a couple friends at a good price. You’ll also need a ruler and a sharpie. We decided on triangles but really you could put whatever you wanted on them to match your decor (or what the kids are into).
It really didn’t take long at all to color in all the boxes and was kind of therapeutic!
Once stacked, it’s hard to resist playing with them.
Add little treats or pieces of paper with a fun activity for the day. I usually print out and have all the activities ready and then sneak it in the night before once I know for sure we can do that activity. Planning ahead of time for a month’s worth of activities doesn’t work well for our schedule. I keep small toys/treats on hand for last minute too just in case!
I stamped numbers on the back so the boys could move the blocks to a new stack each day and keep track of how many days are left until Christmas.
I’m working on some printable notes to slip inside if you are making a calendar this year instead. I’ll try and do a mix of jokes, activities, good deeds etc. to meet a wide range of needs.
Do you do an advent calendar in your house?
