We are a big motocross family. We’ve loved it since the boys were little. I had a box of dirt bike toys that we’d take to the track when they were toddlers and they’d make their own tracks right in the dirt to play on. This DIY sand is perfect for making tracks out of to play inside and with Supercross in full swing it’s a fun activity to get the kids excited.
First you need to make the “sand”. This is a popular recipe for “moon or cloud” dough. Use 4 cups of whole wheat flour (to get the natural sand look) and 1/2 cup (plus a few tablespoons) of vegetable oil or baby oil.
We tried both and both worked about the same but we found that we needed to add a bit more than 1/2 cup of oil so just added some until the consistency was just right.
We made up 2 batches (so 8 cups of flour and 1 cup of oil) and placed it into a foil tin. Then make up your motocross track and race!
You can always mess it up and re-build whenever you want.
Monster trucks are good too!
The best way to do this if you’re playing inside is to place the tin inside a larger container. The kids and the sand could go into a larger box too! Or just be ready with the vacuum afterwards.
It’s fun to play with and molds so you could use your summer sand toys with this as well!

This is a really cool idea. Have you found a way to keep the sand from drying out or do you have to throw it away after the afternoon?
If you store it in a container with a tight fitting lid it will last for quite a while! So any tupperware or zip top plastic bag should work well.
