Here in Phoenix we spend most of our time outdoors in the fall and winter. So when the boys and I were checking out Holiday decor at Big Lots we wondered why we had never decorated our backyard for the holidays. We spend so many nights out there eating dinner or entertaining friends, it would be the perfect spot to add more than just a few lights! So we set to work on adding some outdoor holiday decor to our backyard to create a fun, bright, holiday space!
We’ve only strung a few lights here and there so we didn’t have any decorations to begin with. I let the boys do all the choosing since the years of them being excited to decorate for the holidays could be coming to an end (but I hope not)!
We had so much fun finding and imaging how things would work in our backyard. Big Lots has a great selection of holiday decor at great prices so that made it even harder to decide (styles and assortment vary by store)! We were looking for outdoor decor but still couldn’t help but add some new pieces for inside to our cart. We always find fun “extras” at Big Lots too – toys for the dogs, gluten free snacks for me and all kinds of other things we can’t live without. 😉
We made it out with some great stuff for the backyard and we couldn’t wait to set it all up!
This is what the boys picked out and I added in some necessities like extension cords and clips.
We turned on some Christmas music and got to work! They wanted to get it done so they could spend the rest of the night outside.
We finished just as the sun was going down so the boys made some cocoa and cider in the mugs they picked out and enjoyed their decorating skills!
Oh yes, the leg lamp was a “must have”.
Didn’t they do a great job?! All of these outdoor decorations is all we need for lights outside so we can entertain or just eat a family dinner by these lights without turning on the big flood lights. It’s such a great ambiance!
The boys found a ninja bread man set at Big Lots so we mixed, baked and decorated them after dinner all by the light of our new decorations!
We are so excited to have it all done and ready for the next 2 months because having that out of the way means more time for family and friends. Plus, we can have them all over here since we’re ready to go!

I LOVE WHAT YOU’VE DONE WITH YOUR YARD! The leg lamp is the most and definitely a must-have. I’m going to need that for myself. 🙂 #client
Super fun! Glad your boys could have fun with you setting this up and the dog pictures are hysterical!
