Tween Boy Room Re-Do with Glidden

Choosing a paint color is my least favorite DIY job. I LOVE repainting a space and watching it transform, but the process to choosing that perfect color is not fun. I am picky about colors and undertones, the way they change throughout the day and play off the furnishings. For example this is my son’s room now with a (what I thought was neutral) gray that turned out to look pretty much blue. I don’t mind blue, but I didn’t really want that blue and looking through all the color choices at once was a bit overwhelming.

When we moved in, we kind of just threw all his stuff in his room and it’s been that way ever since. I told him that his room would be the first one I “worked” on when we had time.

When Glidden paint asked us to try out their color choosing tools, we jumped on board! We chose My Image Inspiration, which uses images you choose to present you with a simplified Glidden paint color palette. We loved this idea because my 10-year-old could choose his inspiration images to completely customize his room.

For a peek at how it works, here’s the first image we uploaded

and here’s a screenshot of the My Image Inspiration page after I uploaded the photo

I love that it chooses and suggests colors that will actually look good on a wall in your room and not just a random color from the photo. You can choose to email or print yourself a shopping list based on the simplified color palette you chose.

Here are some images he picked out for inspiration in addition to the one above:

and this image from The Inspired Room that we saw on Glidden Paint’s Color Inspiration Pin Board.

and this image found on the Colortopia blog:

Right now we are leaning towards using Onyx Black with Smoky Charcoal.

We’ve loved browsing the color palettes and choosing some of our own inspiration, and can’t wait to make a final decision! Before we do though, we’d love some feedback from you – which photo do you think we should go with for this tween boy room re-do?

  1. Sadly, it was a long time ago before my daughter was born. I went from yellow/floral to muted pastels for her.

We recently painted my daughters room a light pink, a girly color for her. It's a color she can still grow old with but looks cute for too. She had outgrown the baby color theme we had going on in there.

  7. I am painting three rooms and replacing floors now and I got my idea from The Young and the Restless.

Ugh I'm terrible at anything DYI. Our last home decoration project was painting the kitchen. Not really interesting, oh well.

  11. I was inspired by one of my old issues of Domino magazine. I have every.single.issue. Obsessed with that magazine! I painted my bathroom a gorgeous shimmery champagne color!

  12. A photograph of a pumpkin covered with lace that I saw on Pinterest. I used lace to cover the front of dresser drawers on a dresser I bought at a resale shop.

  18. I re-did a TV room for the 'boys' (as in grown men around here) in earth tones, very much in the style of such a room from my own childhood. What's that about I wonder!

  19. My last project was inspired by a red and brown wreath my grandmother had.

  20. my last project was inspired by a laundry-room makeover i saw in a magazine

  21. What inspired by last project was that I began subscribing to some DIY blogs and couldn't help but notice how bland and unwelcoming our kitchen was so I got straight to work reorganizing and repainting! 🙂

A beach vacation was my last inspiration for redecorating my bathroom. Accessories and shower curtain etc were easy to find. The paint? Shell pink, of course! I used aqua for accent, along with just a little seafoam green. The results were spectacular if I do say so myself. 🙂

  23. I always get design ideas from design on a dime HGTV show….my latest was modernizing my kitchen cabinets with paint and new knobs

  24. We just finished a major remodel. My inspiration was the countertop that I chose very early in the process.
