Phoenix Family Day Trip in a Chevy Colorado ZR2

We LOVE a good day trip and there are so many places a nice drive from Phoenix that we still haven’t explored with the boys. Our partners over at Chevy let us drive around a 2018 Chevy Colorado ZR2 and we took it as an opportunity to take a fun “off-road” trip to Crown King & Prescott for the day! It was a typical Summer day in Phoenix with big temp drops as we drove north, lots of dirt, monsoons and all!

There are 2 ways to get to Crown King – the “regular” way, and a much more primitive road (the “back” way) called the Old Crown King Trail that begins at Lake Pleasant. The back way is really only appropriate for drivers with experience and that have the equipment to handle a rough unmaintained road. We wanted a little road trip adventure but not a full day of off-roading so we took the regular way (which can be a rough ride sometimes). It was the SMOOTHEST we’ve ever driven it. The Chevy Colorado was seriously a dream to drive off road.

I even got some work done here and there with the in-car Wifi (my favorite thing ever). We were super impressed with how comfortable it was to drive around town but it totally won us over with how great it did in the dirt/rocks.

The boys were comfortable in the back along with stuff to keep them busy for the day & we threw an ice chest in the bed. We wanted to explore town, but still enjoy lunch outside so I packed a lunch and plenty of water/drinks for when we wanted to pull over.

I LOVE the Shop App for the Chevrolet Infotainment System & how you can find useful apps for your family. For this trip the Weather Channel app was exactly what we needed with a live doppler radar since it is monsoon season here in the desert and the weather can change by the minute.

We drove into Crown King and explored the local shop (a stop for fudge is a must) and decided that we were in the mood to see some water so we got back into the truck and drove up to Prescott, AZ to Lynx Lake (the boys’ choice). That is what I love most about living in AZ. There are so many places to explore and so many great day trip spots!

There is a lot to explore in Prescott. The boys wanted to skip rocks at the lake and since it was a Wednesday, parking at Lynx Lake was free! There weren’t many people there so they had the water’s edge to themselves most of the time.

We grabbed an early dinner at our favorite little pizza spot – Rosa’s Pizzeria and got back on the road to home but not without plenty of looks and comments about the Colorado ZR2! Seriously, this thing attracted so much attention in our neighborhood and on the road. It’s as beautiful as it is fun to drive. What I loved most about it, besides the fact that it is a diesel and the gas mileage was awesome (as high as 29 miles per gallon in the city), is that it makes a perfect daily driver that you can have fun with on an (off)-road trip adventure.

  1. Awesome photos! It’s nice to see that a family can enjoy the uses of a ZR2.

I’m possibly in the market for one and was looking to see any family related pictures/posts with ZR2’s and came across your blog 🙂

    Glad I came across this!
