Sometimes it can be tough to find new books for my boys to read. I’m always open to new ideas so I thought I’d share some good picks with you! These are outside of the normal super popular series, so hopefully there’s a few you haven’t heard of yet!
My boys really do like to read, but it did taking some trial and error (especially for my 11 year old) to find books that they enjoy. I LOVE buying books at Thriftbooks.com if you’ve never heard of them and you buy books you’re missing out! They sell used books at really great prices (especially the bargain books), free shipping on US Orders of $10 or more, they ship quickly and have a big selection! I bought this latest round of books for just over $20!
My biggest suggestion for friends with boys who ask for book ideas is non-fiction. Both boys have always been into non-fiction books (different subjects depending on the boy) like Disney history, bugs, reptiles, dogs, travel, theme parks, history etc. You might not think about buying your tween a travel book, but mine LOVES reading them! I picked up this Disney A to Z book that’s been on my 12 year old’s list for a little over $4 – total score!
Here’s a little list I pulled together of unique books you may or may not have heard of that are also worth a shot for the 8-13 year old age group depending on reading ability.
- Sir Fartsalot Hunts the Booger
- BONE #1: Out from Boneville
- White Star: A Dog on the Titanic
- The Mysterious Benedict Society
- The Candy Shop War
- Guys Read: Funny Business
Obviously girls will like these as well, but I thought it was a good mix of books that my boys (or boys I know) have enjoyed and “what books are your boys reading and enjoying” seems to be a question I see often on Facebook and Twitter!
Reading is always more fun in a different place (like a fort) or with a flashlight.
I’d love to know what books your boys are enjoying lately! I’ll add them to my Thrift Books wishlist!
I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.

A recent fave in our house is What If: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions (author Munroe). I agree on the Guys Read books!
Oh that’s a great suggestion!
My son is just starting to love to read. It took a while to get there. He has been big time into Star Wars lately. I will have to check out the little list you shared. I had to crack up a little at Sir Fartalot. I have seen that one before but don’t know exactly what it is about.
How about those: http://www.thriftbooks.com/series/magic-shop/38738/
Do you know those books? It seems they’re a great read! 🙂
