“Go color or something. ” is a phrase often uttered by me when I get whines of there being nothing fun to do. The problem is, coloring isn’t always exciting when you’re an 11 year old boy. He loves art but isn’t always sure where to start. He may not be an illustrator, but he loves getting a little artistic now and then. I had forgotten about this, one of my favorite art “techniques” to do when I was younger with the same desire to create, but the lack of artistic skill.
The best part about this, is there’s no wrong way to do it. It is abstract after all. I like to start with cardstock (heavier paper) a marker and any other forms of art supplies that are lying around (like crayons, colored pencils, watercolors…).
Draw lines, straight or curvy, all over the paper with the marker. Intersect and bend wherever you want. You could do this for your kids or have friends do it for each other.
Then, color in the open spaces. So simple. We stuck with a certain color palette for this one of greens, blues and yellows.
The works of art will never be the same and making an abstract piece like this makes everyone feel like an artist. I often doodle this way while working!
