Disclosure: Parker is receiving complimentary treatment but, as usual, opinions here and expressed in the comments are 100% our own.

Parker is now well into his  Invisalign®  treatment and we thought we’d check in with some tips for Invisalign® clear aligner users! Whether you’ve decided on using Invisalign® treatment or not, this list may help answer some questions or bring up some you hadn’t thought of yet to share with your provider!

We see Dr. Feldman and the staff at Feldman Orthodontics in Surprise (or Scottsdale) and direct any new questions we have to them (be sure to check with your provider for specific questions you may have) but we’ve also come up with some tips and tricks that we wanted to share here. We couldn’t be happier with our decision to use Invisalign® clear aligners with Parker and his results are already fantastic!

Tips for Invisalign® Aligner Users from a Mom and Teen:

  • When you first start treatment, practice speaking at home for a few days. You are putting something new into your mouth so you may have a change in saliva or speech. Parker did have a bit of a lisp but a few days practicing at home and he was back to normal. If you think you might be self conscious, give yourself a few days before attending social functions to practice.
  • Keep some disposable toothbrushes in the car or in your backpack. Parker doesn’t always brush but I like to make sure he has them on hand just in case.
  • Make sure you have access to at least water when you eat. That way if you have to hurry back to class you have something to swish around/clean out your mouth before putting your aligners back in. (Ideally you would brush/floss but let’s face it, a teenager isn’t going to do that 100% of the time).
  • Keep some color free mouthwash in your locker, backpack or bag along with your travel toothbrush and floss. It’s great to freshen up your aligners if you need to.
  • Start a new set of aligners at night. We’ve found that if there is any discomfort Parker sleeps right through it!
  • Use your phone camera as a mirror to check for anything in your teeth before putting your aligners back in.
  • Always hold on to your previous set of aligners just in case!
  • From the beginning, don’t make a habit of setting your aligners down. Parker has done GREAT with this. He made a habit of putting them in his case or away when eating. If you get in the habit of setting them down they can easily get thrown away or found by curious pets. If you can, put them in the same place every time you take them out.
  • Ask your provider ahead of time how to file down any sharp or uncomfortable spots on the aligners. We haven’t had much of an issue with this but have read about some. Knowing ahead of time will definitely help keep you comfortable if you need to adjust!
  • Find your favorite way of cleaning your aligners and keep that product on hand. Some like hydrogen peroxide, some clear mouthwash etc. Everyone is different so do what works for you and make sure you’re always ready!
