The Little Mermaid is one of my all-time favorite Disney movies. The soundtrack was the first soundtrack I ever bought on cassette tape & played it on my walkman (or boom box) ALL THE TIME. I did have a DVD when the boys were little and they watched the special features more than the film I think lol! There was one that talked about a Disneyland ride they hoped to make (YEARS before the ride actually came to) and the boys thought it was just the coolest thing. They loved learning about the behind the scenes fun of the film and were just as impressed that I got to meet Disney animator Mark Henn as I was!
Mark has worked on SO many Disney films and was the supervising animator for many of your favorite Princesses including Ariel! When I was in Los Angeles for the Disney sponsored Ralph Breaks the Internet Event we got a chance to sit down with Mark Henn and take a little drawing class (more on that later). He is funny, sweet, and incredibly talented. We chatted with him a bit about the difference in 2D and 3D animation and how much things have changed since he started.
I could only listen so much though because I was mesmerized watching him in action. It was like the best Disneyland Animation Academy class EVER. To add even more icing to the cake I got a package in the mail the other day with a gorgeous print of the line drawing Mark did in our group! I LOVE it and can’t wait to get it framed and hung up.
So why was Mark Henn showing us how to draw the Little Mermaid? Because it’s out of the vault for The Little Mermaid’s 30th Anniversary as part of the Walt Disney Signature Collection. You can get it digitally starting today and on Blu-ray on February 26th!
