It’s 6:30/7am and the alarm goes off (next year for high school it’s earlier but we aren’t talking about that right now). After I let the dogs out and wake up a bit I sit down to push out some computer work with a cup of hot coffee. Every morning. It’s my routine, my “me” time and it’s even better on the weekends with a book instead of my computer! I like to try to keep an eye out for easy ways to give back with things we do every day like a cup of coffee. While Parker and I were shopping for essentials I made sure to pick up a bag of Starbucks® Pike Place® Roast because for every bag of Starbucks® 10-12z & 20z Ground or Whole Bean coffee purchased at participating Albertsons Company stores in the U.S. from May 1st through May 28, Starbucks, through its partnership with Conservation International, provides one disease-resistant coffee tree to a coffee farmer in Guatemala or El Salvador.
Giving Back
Yes! Starbucks will donate 70¢ to Conservation International for every bag of coffee sold at participating Albertsons Company stores in the U.S. from May 1st through May 28 to foster thriving coffee communities. Do you try to give back in little ways like this? I enjoyed looking up and learning about this effort (it’s not the first year they’ve done this). I love the thinking that it can start with one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time. Together, Conservation International and Starbucks are sparking an industry-wide movement to make coffee the first sustainable agricultural product in the world which is super inspiring.
Once I’ve finished a bag I like to come up with ways to reuse the packaging to further the giving back. We love origami and this is a favorite project to use stronger materials like the Starbucks Pike Place Roast bag because it will hold up better!
Origami Wallet from a Coffee Bag
Open up the bag at the seams and wipe off any coffee grounds left. Carefully remove the plastic pressure valve.
Trim the bag to 8” x 9”.
Next you’ll fold the bag “hamburger or taco style” Basically, along the long end so you’re folding the 9” side to make it 4.5”. Run your fingernail along the crease to make it as tight as possible.
Open back up and fold each edge into the center fold. Open back up so you have 3 creases.
Next, fold the corners in to meet the creases closest to them.
Then, fold back down on those outside creases so the corners are tucked inside. Turn the whole thing over.
Now, fold the entire thing in half!
Open back up. The crease you just made is the center of the wallet. Fold the outside edges into the center on each side. To secure you’ll want to glue these final flaps down. The triangles are where you’ll keep your cards or money!
