One of my goals as a mom has always been to raise mindful and compassionate kids. I’ve always believed that small little acts of kindness can make a huge difference in other people’s lives but in our own as well. Ever since the boys started school I have encouraged them to keep their eyes and ears open and help others when they can (and not to feel bad when they can’t). We try to do little things here and there that show them that we are always thinking of others. Something as simple as giving someone your extra pencil or a snack when they forgot theirs can go a long way!
Sharing
Now that I have one kiddo starting high school he has a lot more freedom and time with his friends. One of the things he loves to do is pack extra snacks in his backpack to share with his friends at lunch or on the walk home. When he was in grade school I told him a story about how my brother and I went to school with siblings who obviously didn’t have all the things we considered necessities in life. Once my mom heard us talking about them at dinner and she started sending us with extras at lunch to share with our classmates. They didn’t eat them at school but always took them home to snack on. To this day I remember making them happy with such a small gesture.
Now that my boys are older, the situation isn’t the same but I love that they think of their friends and want to bring snacks for them to share on the walk home from school. It’s just our way of packing their bags with love for them and their friends/classmates. The boys have always loved Snyder’s of Hanover pretzels. They have been a go-to in our house since they were little and these on-the-go packs are perfect to keep on hand.
Lately they’ve been trying all the Lance sandwich crackers varieties after Jared and I told them how we’d always get these as snacks when we were their age (they’ve been making little sandwiches for over 100 years!). Between those and the Snack Better Variety pack we always have lots of great snacks around the house for everyone. The boys and their friends are all about those Nacho Chipotle chips lately!
We pick all of these up at Target or Fry’s depending on where we’re doing our shopping for that week you can pick them up in the snack or chip aisle. I LOVE all the individually packed snacks during the school year.
In addition to snacks for the walk home, we also pack extra pencils and pens because there’s nothing worse than getting in trouble for not having the correct writing utensils! Keeping extras means my boys have plenty to share with a classmate in need.
This year I’m also adding mobile phone chargers. High school brings a whole new set of independent challenges, a lot of which now rely on communicating with their phones. Plugging them in during class isn’t exactly discreet so a portable charger makes it easy to help a friend in need even in your backpack.
